Artist Statement

I have always been inspired by nature and studied both ecology and art while at the University of Colorado, Boulder. I now work with the U.S. Forest Service conducting plant biology research as well as skiing, climbing and painting in my free time. In such a digital world I still love to slow down and work in physical art mediums. My aim when making art is to provoke curiosity and connection with the natural environment. To inspire connection I wanted this scene to feel familiar and yet ambiguous. I chose to paint a fictitious mountainscape, allowing everyone to recognize elements of their own experience in the outdoors, regardless of where they may have skied. To spark curiosity for mountain landscapes I drew on my knowledge of real Rocky Mountain flora, incorporating botanically accurate wildflowers into the meadow below the mountains. Do you recognize any of them? Will they catch your eye in the future?
